Overview

St James and St William are market leading brands that operate under the Berkeley Group. Awarded Housebuilder of the Year in 2022, the Group are responsible for regenerating much of the modern development along Central London’s riverside, transforming former industrial areas into vibrant places to live, work and play.

The Challenge

St James and St William recognise that effective contractor management is critical to their ongoing success. Construction projects rely on a wide range of contractors across different trades to work together effectively; these high-pressure environments provide a melting pot of different personalities, cultures, skills and experience, which can often lead to conflict of interests, breakdowns in communication and opposing views on risk management.

“Our STARS training programme, developed with Ed and Josh, has been a fantastic experience for our supervisors. Their tailored sessions provided invaluable insights and practical skills essential for leadership in the construction industry. The comprehensive curriculum was designed not only to enhance immediate supervisory skills but also to foster long-term career development. The positive feedback from participants and the immediate implementation of new techniques on-site are testaments to the programme’s success. We are impressed with the outcomes and are committed to making this empowering training an ongoing part of our professional development initiatives.”

Tom Anderson, Head of Health & Safety for St James & St William

The Solution

Human Capital Partners (HCP) was tasked to re-design and deliver a leadership programme to engage and equip two cohorts of Black Hat supervisors. The comprehensive eightweek programme was built to challenge and raise the bar on the attitudes and behaviours of what it means to be a successful site supervisor, through a pragmatic approach to risk management and the development of exemplary inclusive leadership skills. The programme covered key themes such as uncovering your personal leadership style, understanding risk, mental health awareness, world-class communication and how to have healthy conflict.

“We have run our St James STARS programme (Supervisor Training And Recognition Scheme) for six years and see real value from supporting our trade Black Hat supervisors across our schemes. This year was our first partnering with Human Capital Partners (HCP) and our most successful yet. Ed and Josh worked hard with us to quickly evolve the curriculum and brought new energy and engagement into the room with our supply chain. I look forward to building on this success with them next year!” James Saunders, Construction Director for St James & St William

“I’ve been in this game a long time and it s taken me this long to value things in a different light. As a result of this programme I plan to take a step back and listen more. At work I am the type of guy who generally barks orders and tells people what to do. This programme has helped me better understand my role as a leader and how I get the best from others”
